How close is the Mammoth Site to your motel?
The Mammoth Site sits on the south end of Hot Springs, and we’re just up the road from it. From our front door, it’s about a mile — usually a three-minute drive, or a walk if you’re up for it and the weather’s nice.
To get there, head south on 6th Street and follow the signs toward the Mammoth Site off Highway 18 Truck Route. It’s well marked, and you really can’t miss it once you’re close. Being this near means you don’t have to plan your whole day around a long drive. You can catch an early tour before the crowds, come back to rest, then head out again to see more of the Black Hills.
Why our rooms work well for families visiting the dig
The Mammoth Site is a favorite with kids, and a day of walking through the fossil bonebed and the Fossil Finds Museum can wear little ones out. We’ve made sure families have a comfy spot to land at the end of the day.

The Fall River trail runs right through town, and we’re an easy walk from it. It’s a good spot for a stroll or a bike ride, and it follows the warm-water river that gives Hot Springs its name. Wind Cave National Park is a short drive north, with cave tours, prairie, and wildlife like bison and prairie dogs. If your kids liked the mammoth bones, they’ll probably enjoy the underground passages at Wind Cave too.
Downtown Hot Springs has its old sandstone buildings, shops, and places to eat, all close by. And from here you’re well positioned to reach the rest of the Black Hills — Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, and more are all within reach for day trips.
